A new name, no home games, no anthem: the first FIFA sanctions against Russia remain largely cosmetic. The coming opponents seem more consistent.

Fifa shows Putin's Russia a yellow card - the world football association apparently couldn't bring itself to red: the Russian team is no longer allowed to play at home.

There is no World Cup exclusion for the time being.

In addition to the home game ban, Fifa also banned Russian flags or the anthem in future games.

This is how the association reacted to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

From now on, home games will be played on neutral ground.

In addition, the national team is no longer allowed to play under the name of Russia.

In future it will appear under the name of its association RFU.

This was announced by Fifa on Sunday evening.

The decision was made unanimously and in close consultation with the European Football Union (Uefa).

Fifa also reserves the right to impose further sanctions.

There is a risk that the qualifying games will be cancelled

Russia was not excluded from the World Cup play-offs - the »Sbornaja« therefore beckons in extreme cases to qualify for the World Cup tournament in Qatar without a fight.

The first play-off opponent Poland, like the other possible opponents on the Russian branch of the tournament tree, Sweden and the Czech Republic, recently categorically ruled out playing games against a Russian national team against the background of the war of aggression in Ukraine.

In its statement, Fifa again condemned the "Russian violence during the invasion" and emphasized its "deepest solidarity" with all the people affected.

In addition, the world association called for "the restoration of peace and the immediate establishment of a constructive dialogue".
