Opinion | Anna Wiliki: "I expect more women to run the sport" | Israel today

2022-03-08T10:15:13.848Z

Women's sports need more stage in the media • I would expect more women who were athletes to run the sport in Israel, like Yael Arad, who heads the Olympic Committee • A volleyball player in Israel works another job because it is impossible to make a living from the industry • Hapoel Kfar Saba captain in a special column

From the age of 14, for 25 years, I have been in professional sports, and it is clear to me that women's sports need more of a platform in the media.

There is not enough exposure in the country, and we need it not to move forward, but so that we can bring more girls and young women closer to engage in sports.

We need an explanatory campaign for this, but also more financial support, from the government and sponsors who have created good conditions.

Sports centers and classes must be opened.

Although there are many active athletes, who achieve medals, but unfortunately, most of the girls in the world do not do enough sports.

I recently read that the International Olympic Committee noted after the Tokyo Games that there should be equality between the number of men and women active in each industry.

I wish that would happen, but for that you need budgets and I would expect them to have a comparison between men and women.

A beautiful woman can be both strong and engaged in sports, and I would expect more women who were athletes to run the sport in the country, like Yael Arad, who heads the Olympic Committee.

I believe that the day will come when an athlete will earn like an athlete, but it will take time, and it is not clear why it is not like that yet.

Unfortunately, even in countries where volleyball is considered very popular, such as Italy, Russia and Brazil, men earn more, except in exceptional cases.

A volleyball player in Israel works another job because it is impossible to make a living from the industry.

In recent years budgets have been cut, and sponsors are barely coming.

That way volleyball will never be able to progress.

For me volleyball is the only job and enough to live modestly, I will no longer be rich from it.

Sponsors will be able to benefit if they support female volleyball because it is an intelligent sport, beautiful to the eye and without violence.

Mothers and children come to watch.

Need a big sponsor, to build a volleyball academy to create a good base.

It does not have to be big money.

Children get motivated when they see their mother doing sports, and they follow in her footsteps.

My 17-year-old daughter plays second-grade basketball, which gives her a lot of confidence and health.

When her mood is not good, in training she frees herself from all thoughts.

As for sexual harassment, I have not encountered it in sports.

I was born in the USSR, and in the culture there there was no situation where a coach would seek to harass an athlete.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
