War in Ukraine: former tennis player Andrei Medvedev also joins the national army

The list of Ukrainian athletes taking up arms to defend their country against the Russian invader has grown with a new name, that of Andrei Medvedev.

The former tennis player (47), now captain of the Ukrainian national team, has come to swell the ranks of the army in recent days.

The information was revealed by another player, Sergiy Stakhovsky, on Instagram.

“The world tennis legend remains in Kyiv and is ready to face the enemy.

I am extremely happy to see Medvedev on our side

,” Stakhovsky wrote, accompanying his message with a photo of him and his compatriot in combat gear.

4th player in the world in 1994

Andreï Medvedev, who definitely put away his racket in 2001, had reached the final of the Roland-Garros tournament two years earlier, losing to Andre Agassi in five sets after leading two sets to nil.

Fourth player in the world ranking in 1994, he has eleven tournament victories on the ATP circuit and in particular a prestigious success at the Monte-Carlo tournament.
