Assistant referee Christian Gittelmann demanded severe penalties after the Becher attack in Bochum.

"A comprehensive zero-tolerance policy with a clearly defined penalty that is known to everyone in advance should be worked out," said Gittelmann in an interview on the website of the German Football Association (DFB).

This is the only way to avoid "acts of violence" against referees - especially "on the amateur courts".

Gittelmann was hit in the back of the head by a full cup in the VfL Bochum game against Borussia Mönchengladbach after almost 70 minutes.

Referee Benjamin Cortus first interrupted the game and then finally stopped it.

"In the event of an assault on a game official, there is simply no alternative to abandoning the game," Cortus later said.

"The hit took me away, especially since it hit me unexpectedly in the head with full force," said Gittelmann, who was examined in the hospital after the incident.

Florian Heft, Cortus' second assistant, had accompanied Gittelmann.

"A contused skull and whiplash were diagnosed."

Scheduled for international duty

The act made him “stunned”.

He will take a few days "to calm down and process the matter".

Then he would like to "return to the field as soon as possible".

He is scheduled for an international match next weekend.

It was the eighth game abandoned in the Bundesliga.

The DFB control committee will start the investigation on Monday.

According to the head of the sports court, Stephan Oberholz, there will be a game evaluation procedure and criminal proceedings “against the club whose supporters behaved accordingly”.

Borussia Mönchengladbach, who were leading 2-0 at the time of the demolition, will most likely be awarded the points.

Promoted Bochum, who were allowed to let 25,000 fans into the stadium again for the first time after most of the corona restrictions were lifted, is also threatened with a ghost game.

Eleven years ago, when a beer mug also hit a linesman, FC St. Pauli was sentenced to do so in addition to losing at the green table.

In retrospect, the penalty was reduced to a game in a stadium at least 50 kilometers away.

The club estimated the loss of income at more than 400,000 euros.
