The rapid rise of Bayern talent Paul Wanner should have continued at the DFB.

The promotion from the U17 to the U21 national team was imminent.

Munich

- There have already been several talks with DFB director Oliver Bierhoff and U21 coach Antonio di Salvo, in which those responsible outlined Wanner's possible path to the senior national team.

But as our newspaper learned, U17 coach Marc-Patrick Meister thwarted these plans.

He campaigned in the background both at Wanner himself, at FC Bayern and within the association for a U17 appointment of the player.

Paul Wanner: Austria attracts with immediate assignments

Background: Meister and his team are currently playing the second round of the European Championship qualifier - and the U17 coach saw this goal in jeopardy without Wanner.

It was no problem for the player himself to complete the current course with his long-time teammates.

The team celebrated their first qualifying success on Wednesday, beating Georgia 3-0 in Falkirk, Scotland, and taking the lead in group three after the 2-2 draw between Scotland and the Czech Republic.

The eight group winners and the seven second-placed teams with the best record against the first and third-placed teams in their group qualify for the European Championship in Israel (May 16 to June 1).

Wanner was on the pitch the entire season, but the goals were scored by others: Hoffenheim's Tom Bischof, who FC Bayern also had in mind in the summer, Nelson Weiper from Mainz 05 and substitute Maurice Krattenmacher from SpVgg Unterhaching.

The association is also working so hard on Wanner's DFB future because the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) is also intensively courting the youngster.

Wanner was born in Dornbirn, Austria, and his mother is from Vorarlberg, which is why Paul has dual citizenship.

The Austrians lure the player with immediate assignments in the senior national team of coach Franco Foda.

In the near future there will be a meeting with ÖFB representatives and the Wanner family.
