The countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympics began when the full competition schedule was released tonight (Friday).
The games kicked off July 24 to August.
11 and include 329 medal events, 10 less than the record of 339 in Tokyo.
For Paris, it will be the third time in history when it hosts the Olympics and 100 years after it last did so.
It is also the first Olympics to be held in Western Europe since 2012, and the timing of the events will be very similar to those London Games.
Contrary to tradition in recent years, handball will be the first competition in games, two days before the opening ceremony.
The reason?
France shares the Olympic record of medals in the industry (seven) and gold medals (four), including a double gold medal for men and women in Tokyo.
On the same day, as usual, football matches will also start in a number of cities across France, including Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Etienne.
The surfing industry that made its debut in Tokyo and will also stay in Los Angeles 2028, will take place in the first four days in Tahiti, allowing for more days of competitions, in case the weather does not allow the original schedule.
Tahiti, an island in French Polynesia about 9,800 miles from Paris, will break the record for the farthest Olympic medal competition to be held away from the host.
In 1956, the events of the horse competitions were moved from Melbourne due to quarantine laws and were held five months earlier in Stockholm, about 9,700 miles away.
Breakdance is the lone sport in the Paris program that will make its Olympic debut, though it was held at the last Youth Summer Olympics in 2018, when it could be watched two days before the graduation ceremony.
