SV Werder Bremen drew 1-1 against SV Sandhausen, but still climbed to the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The game report of the DeichStube*.

Bremen – The statistics are sometimes merciless.

Since she spits out a clear superiority of

SV Werder Bremen

in all areas, only in the most important category, the balance is not right: the result.

In the home game against

SV Sandhausen

, the hosts were far from setting off sporting fireworks, but there was actually no reason for a setback in the fight to return to the Bundesliga.

But it existed anyway.

Because Bremen made a crucial mistake, which led to a deficit that

Marvin Ducksch

still converted to a 1:1 (0:0) with his 17th goal.

But nothing more.

And that was pretty sobering for everyone at Werder.

But first there were other things to clarify.

After Milos Veljkovic returned from a trip to the Serbian national team during the week, there was a lot of speculation in the run-up to the Sandhausen game about how this loss should be made up for in the absence of Ömer Toprak and Marco Friedl.

Due to a lack of alternatives, the name Lars Lukas Mai kept circulating in this context - despite his recent weaker appearances.

However, Ole Werner

proved in his line-up

that trust in Bayern Munich's loan seems to have run out.

Instead of bringing Mai, he pulled

Nicolai Rapp

back into the back three.

Werder Bremen starts against SV Sandhausen with Marvin Ducksch and Niklas Schmidt

He gave the reason for this shortly afterwards on the "Sky" microphone: "We recently played a half with Lasse in Heidenheim, one with Rappo.

We liked what we saw with Rappo better overall – that's why we made that decision.” This change meant that

Ilia Gruev

was allowed to play on the six.

Since Leonardo Bittencourt, unlike

Marvin Ducksch

, was not yet in full possession of his strength after his corona infection, Niklas Schmidt started again in midfield.

The new Bremen formation needed a while to get into the game.

The guests, who recently attracted attention mainly because of their defence, interrupted unexpectedly early on, which made the build-up of

the game anything but easy for

Werder Bremen .

As a result, after a fairly calm initial phase, it was a long-range shot by Rapp that posed a threat for the first time.

The ball delicately touched the crossbar and flew over the goal (17').

Werder Bremen with difficulties and too little speed against defensive SV Sandhausen

Although the encounter was still far from being awarded the title “swinging”, the home team gradually picked up the pace – with the emphasis on gradually.

Niclas Füllkrug tried it from an acute angle against Sandhausen's keeper

Patrick Drewes

, but the Delmenhorster native was careful (28').

As a result,

Werder Bremen

had the events under control, but did very little with this superiority.

At the break, the goal shot statistics showed a ratio of 10:0 for the green-whites, but it was rarely really dangerous.

Felix Agu had another really big chance just before going into the dressing room after a cross from

Romano Schmid

he headed free-standing but directly at the goalkeeper (45th).

Immediately after the break, Schmid initiated the next opportunity, but this time Ducksch couldn't get the ball past Drewes (49').

Werder Bremen

remained active, always looking for a finish, but the accuracy was still lacking - for example when Schmidt and Ducksch shot well over the opponent's goal from good positions in quick succession.

Shortly afterwards, Schmidt was off work, after an hour it was time for the long-awaited Bittencourt comeback.

But before he could even distinguish himself, things happened the way they had to.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen: Ilia Gruev's bad pass initiates a deficit through ex-Bremer Pascal Testroet

Ilia Gruev allowed himself a bad pass, which brought ex-Bremer

Pascal Testroet

into play.

The Sandhäuser striker made his way in the direction of the Werder penalty area, let Anthony Jung out with a simple body trick and put the guests in front with the very first shot on goal, because Jiri Pavlenka didn't look too good in this scene either (64. ).

Suddenly

Werder Bremen

was behind, and the championship

lead

that would have been there with the previous meager point was gone.

But only for a few minutes.

Schmid once again drove the ball forward, served Ducksch, who had been almost ineffective up to that point, and who, in his own unique way, shot the ball directly into the far corner (73').

So the really big damage was averted for the time being, but was there more?

The crowd was there again, with fans singing and hooting in hopes of the next important win in the

promotion

race .

But the clock ticked down mercilessly.

Niclas Füllkrug

still had the great opportunity to score three points for

SV Werder Bremen

.

In the penalty area, he appeared in a perfect position in front of the

SV Sandhausen

goal , but Drewes defused the situation again (86').

Not only Bittencourt, who had waited a bit better for a pass, then scolded like a sparrow.

The Bremen team still had five minutes of added time, but they usually maneuvered the ball into the danger zone much too awkwardly.

And so it ended up being 1-1.

Werder was top of the table again.

But nobody really wanted to be enthusiastic about it.

Werder Bremen:

Pavlenka - Mbom (72nd Schönfelder), Rapp, Groß, Jung, Agu (86th Dinkci) - Gruev, Schmidt (61st Bittencourt), Schmid - Füllkrug, Ducksch

3:32 p.m.

With that we say goodbye.

See you next Saturday for the top game against FC St. Pauli!

3:28 p.m.: That was it.

The game is over.

Werder Bremen only plays 1-1 at home against Sandhausen.

The good news: Werder is back at the top.

The bad news: there was a lot more in it.

The hosts missed several good chances, conceded the 0:1 with Sandhausen's only chance to score, but had the right man in the right place in Marvin Ducksch.

90.+5

: Sandhausen takes time off the clock again.

Substitute Kutucu leaves, replaced by Diakhite.

90.+3: Füllkrug takes the ball down in the five, turns around his opponent and is then left in front of Drewes, but the angle is too acute so that he cannot put the ball in the goal.

Good chance!

90.+2:

Werder keep pressing, here one ball after the other sails into the SVS penalty area!

90.+1:

There are another five minutes of stoppage time!

88 min:

A Ducksch cross lands on Bittencourt's thigh at the far post, but he lets the ball drip too far.

Trybull hurts himself in the scene, Dumic sees yellow after a discussion.

Something's going on here!

87 min: That must be 2: 1 for Werder!

Werder follows up, Füllkrug gets the ball, has a clear path, can use Bittencourt or Ducksch, but tries it himself.

Drewes parried.

The play would have been better!

86 min:

Ole Werner also changes.

Agu goes, Dinkci comes.

85 min:

Schönfelder crosses sharply on the left in front of the goal, Zhirov clears.

Good scene!

83 minutes:

Sandhausen changes the staff.

Soukou makes way for Bashkim Ajdini.

81 min:

Ducksch puts the ball sharply in front of the goal, but it won't be dangerous.

80 min:

Agu takes a free kick deep in the opponent's half, a good position on the right.

76 min:

Ducksch with the next opportunity, but Drewes holds.

75 min:

It's that easy: Schmid plays Ducksch in the penalty area, who easily pulls it straight and hits the far corner.

Not a spectacular goal, actually the situation wasn't even top-class, but Ducksch does it cleverly and scores his 17th goal of the season.

73 min: GOOOOOOOOR for Werder!

Ducksch scores 1:1!

72 min:

Werder Bremen also changes.

Ole Werner takes Mbom off the field and sends Oscar Schönfelder to the same.

70 min:

How does Werder react?

Not much has changed so far: the hosts continue to press, play forward, but there are no clear chances to score.

69 min:

Sandhausen changes.

Goalscorer Testroet goes, but Arne Sicker comes.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: unbelievable!

Werder puts pressure - Sandhausen the goal

67 min:

It's an absolute classic, because until then Werder didn't allow anything, really nothing at all.

The hosts had a few good chances up front, but Sandhausen was callous.

Alois Schwartz's tactics are working, it's like on the Playstation, controllers would fly here now.

65 min:

Gruev shoots a sand house in the leg.

They follow suit, Testroet has the ball, fools Jung in the penalty area, then closes with the left.

Jung easily deflects the ball that was not shot hard, but that's enough for Pavlenka to no longer react and fish the ball away.

64 min: That doesn't exist.

Sandhausen made it 1-0 with the first attack.

And it was a fat Werder buck...

61 min:

Werder changes.

Schmidt goes, Bittencourt can still show up for half an hour.

60 min:

Werder is currently in a pressure phase.

Sandhausen hardly comes out of the sixteen.

But it doesn't become really dangerous because Sandhausen's defense is always right and Bremen's crosses and passes lack accuracy.

56 min:

First Schmid does it really well, drives the ball and fools two opponents, then he puts it out to Ducksch, who pulls inwards - and almost beats the ball out of the stadium.

Somehow the top scorer still has bad luck sticking to his shoes.

55 min:

Sandhausen now combines forward, Testroet goes to the ball, but Mbom throws himself in between and clarifies the situation.

52 min:

Mbom sends to Füllkrug, who wants to put Ducksch in the middle, but a sand house straddles the ball fairly.

50 min:

Jung sees yellow after a foul on Bachmann.

It's his fifth, so he's missing the northern duel against FC.

St Pauli.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: Werder is putting pressure on and has chances

49 min:

Schmid puts through for Ducksch, but he can't quite take the ball with him, tries an outside shot, which Drewes parries easily.

48 min:

And this is what Sandhausen's offensive currently looks like: Free kick from the left half-field, but before the ball reaches anyone, Petersen whistles an offensive foul against Dumic.

47 min:

Ducksch crosses to Füllkrug, which hinders Drewes fairly so that he only lets the ball bounce.

From the back, Schmid tries from a distance, but too imprecisely.

46 min:

And directly the first offensive scene!

Ducksch is sent into the penalty area, but only gets a corner against Diekmeier.

46 min:

The game is on again!

2:34 p.m.:

Teams return to the field after a 15-minute rest period.

2:21 p.m .:

It is a very, very tough game.

Werder have a lot of ball possession and also had a few offensive actions, but overall the SVS defense is good.

Pavlenka has had a very quiet working day so far.

A little more spectacle in the second half would be desirable, a Werder goal of course even more so.

Rapp, Füllkrug and Agu were pretty close to that.

We are in good spirits.

2:18 p.m .: And that was the last action before the half-time break!

45.+1: Agu!

Schmid crosses from the right, Agu dives in and heads, Drewes makes a strong save!

44 min:

Ducksch goes to the ball. If he wins the duel, he has a clear path, but Zhirov straddles and has the ball.

42 min:

Ducksch creates space with a turn, closes from 20 meters – well over it.

40 min:

Schmid tries it flat from the sixteen, but Drewes raises both arms, the ball goes past the long corner.

39 min:

Füllkrug comes to the header, but doesn't get any pressure behind the attempt and goes wide of the goal anyway.

38 min:

There is a corner for Werder.

35 min:

Now Werder has a longer ball possession phase in the opponent's half, but Sandhausen is good and doesn't leave any gaps.

32 min:

It's getting dangerous on the other side!

Testroet plays sharp and low in front of goal, where Zenga straddles the ball but only hits the Agu.

There's a free kick.

31 min:

Werder counters, Ducksch plays a direct ball into Schmid's run, who runs one-on-one, but cannot keep up the pace and has to stop.

He tries to put the ball in Ducksch's path with his heel, but it doesn't work.

In the second wave, Ducksch heads clearly past.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: Tough game – Nicolai Rapp and Niclas Füllkrug miss the lead

29 min:

From the corner, Schmid gets the ball on the sixteen and tries a flick, which Drewes holds without much effort.

28 min:

Filling jug!

Schmid plays through defence, where Füllkrug takes the ball with his chest and then finishes with his left.

Drewes is in the corner and clears the corner.

27 min:

Little happens.

Now Werder comes with two passes in the opposing half, Mbom brings the ball in from the right, but only finds a defensive leg.

23 min:

The free kick itself is not worth mentioning, but in the rebuild the ball lands on the right at Mbom.

He has a lot of space, he has a lot of time, just pulls it flat – and then several Werder players and sand houses slip past the ball.

Not entirely harmless.

22 min:

Agu is fouled by Soukou and then falls unhappily against the knee of the onrushing Diekmeier.

But the young left-back is already back.

There's a free kick.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: Nicolai Rapp only hits the bar

18 min:

That was the first real scoring opportunity for both teams, who have so far treated themselves to a very restrained initial phase.

Nobody increases the tempo decisively, the crosses don't find any buyers yet.

17 min: Rapp tries from a distance and kicks the bar!

Can you try it?

16 min:

Pavlenka fishes the ball down.

15 min:

Ducksch free kick from the half field, which goes treacherously into Sandhausen's penalty area, but somehow clears the ball.

Then the counterattack rolls, there is a corner for the SVS.

12. Min:

The first conclusion of the game comes from SV Sandhausen, Bachmann heads a cross from the half field but clearly past Pavlenka's box.

10 min:

Werder combines in the penalty area for the first time, but Ducksch then has to turn a loop and loses the ball with a weak pass.

8 min:

Sandhausen boldly disrupts Werder early on in the build-up game, but so far the defense hasn't been in trouble for Groß.

5.Min :

Early yellow card against Trybull, who goes into a tackle with Mbom without taking prisoners.

A track over it for referee Petersen.

3. Min:

Diekmeier's cross then becomes a boomerang, Werder counters.

Ducksch comes to the ball on the left, raises his head and crosses into the middle, but goalkeeper Drewes intercepts the ball.

3. Min:

Diekmeier with two crosses into the Werder penalty area, twice with a throw-in, once with a cross, but the green-whites clear it.

1. Min:

Sandhausen plays in the first half on the east curve, which Werder initially has in the back.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: The game is on

1st Min: Referee Petersen releases the game, Sandhausen starts.

1:28 p.m .:

The teams are ready and running in, Werder are led onto the field by Christian Groß.

1:24 p.m .:

Friedl almost had a result tip elicited, but then still gets the curve, but promises a victory “if we knock everything out”.

1:21 p.m .:

The injured Marco Friedl talks about Ömer Toprak on the Sky microphone: “Ömer is not only extremely important for us on the pitch, but also off the pitch.

We'll be happy when he's back.” He doesn't take a critical view of the changes in defence: “If everyone is there for the other, it works.” Coach Ole Werner, meanwhile, sees it as “important” that Gruev and Ducksch stand back in place.

1:11 p.m .:

But Werder can rely on them: the fans.

The Weser Stadium isn't sold out today, but that's not because of the Bremen fans, it's because Sandhausen didn't get the guest block completely filled.

Otherwise, every place is occupied, everyone wants to see how Ole Werner's men take a potentially big step towards promotion.

1:06 p.m .:

The situation with the guests from Sandhausen is completely different.

They are in 15th place, benefiting from Dresden's defeat against Schalke (1:2) and the fact that Hannover 96 couldn't win against Regensburg (1:1).

Nevertheless, the distance to the relegation place is only two points.

That alone shows that there should be a team out there that wants the points more than anything else.

1:03 p.m .:

Today Werder can break away from the competition for Darmstadt, St. Pauli and Schalke.

Of course, this requires a win.

But even a simple point win would be enough to lead the table.

12:59 p.m .:

And the first leg also taught SV Werder: Watch out for Pascal Testroet.

The ex-Bremer scored both Sandhausen goals and brought the Green-Whites to the brink of defeat.

The 31-year-old played at Osterdeich from 2008 to 2011, but only played for the U23s in the 3rd division.

In the 3rd league and the 2nd Bundesliga, however, he has since established himself as a reliable goalscorer.

12:54 p.m .:

We look at the balance sheet of both teams against each other: It is as manageable as it is balanced: A competitive game, the 2: 2 with goals from Rapp and late equalization by Füllkrug in injury time in October last year.

12.44 p.m .:

The referee of today’s game is Martin Petersen.

The 37-year-old from Stuttgart has already officiated three games involving Werder in the 2nd Bundesliga this season alone: in addition to the 4-1 defeat at home against Paderborn, the 3-0 against Heidenheim and the 4-1 in Hanover.

He is assisted by Robert Wessel and Fabian Porsch, fourth official is Mario Hildenbrand, VAR is Robert Schröder, assisted by Patrick Kessel.

12.38 p.m .:

The guests from Sandhausen are coached by Alois Schwartz and start today as follows: Drewes – Diekmeier (C), Dumic, Zhirov, Okoroji – Kinsombi, Zenga, Bachmann, Trybull, Soukou, Testroet.

Wiedwald (ET), Ajdini, Seufert, Ritzmaier, Kutucu, Deville, Diakhite, Sicker and Esswein sit on the bench.

For Diekmeier, Trybull, Testroet and Wiedwald it will be a return to their roots as they have all worn the green and white jersey before.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen in the live ticker: the line-ups are there

12:34 p.m .:

Due to the personnel situation, this list was more or less foreseeable.

Bittencourt will probably remain on the bench for the time being, as he should first be rested due to his corona infection.

12:30 p.m.: The lineups are here!

Coach Ole Werner trusts the following staff: Pavlenka - Mbom, Rapp, Groß, Jung, Agu - Gruev, Schmidt, Schmid - Füllkrug, Ducksch.

Seated on the bench: Backhaus (ET), Bittencourt, Assalé, Schönfelder, Mai, Woltemade, Straaudi, Chiarodia, Dinkci.

12:29 p.m .:

What we definitely already know: Ömer Toprak, Marco Friedl and Milos Veljkovic are out.

12.27 p.m .:

Hello from the Deichstube!

Best football weather in Bremen, a bit cold, but that shouldn't stand in the way of a great football afternoon!

Werder Bremen welcomes SV Sandhausen, we're waiting for the line-ups of both teams, especially Bremen, of course.

Werder Bremen against SV Sandhausen - the preliminary report:

tripping hazard!

SV Sandhausen has recently annoyed several top teams - Werder Bremen does not want to be one of them

"

Werder Bremen

is a very strong team that has won ten times in the last twelve games, only drawn once and lost only once." Fourth

SV Sandhausen

makes a kind of top game in the second half of the season.

Ole Werner

put it in a nutshell: “It will be a really nice job that we are really looking forward to.

We are as ready as one can be.” (dco) *
