The corona pandemic has had a “massive impact” on FC Bayern – but the club still doesn’t want to be left behind internationally for a long time, says Oliver Kahn. Future marketing could also play a role.

CEO Oliver Kahn does not see the German record champions Bayern Munich as a training club for the financially strong Premier League clubs in the medium term.

"Certainly not!" said the former world-class goalkeeper when asked in an interview with "Sport Bild".

The corona pandemic also had a "massive impact" on Bayern and attacked the much-cited time deposit account, "but we will continue to be sportingly and economically strong and attractive for top players in the future," promised the 52-year-old: "We know exactly in which fields we are more than competitive and where we want to develop further.« He was in a positive mood »that we can experience another successful Bavarian decade«.

In this context, Kahn defended the reform of the Champions League format.

The premier class will “take it to the next level of development from 2024”.

The former national goalkeeper expects more excitement from the league system than in the current group phase, that would have resulted from the Uefa simulation.

One could "certainly argue" about the two wild cards provided for top clubs, said Kahn, who referred to the performance criterion of the five-year rating.

Will there be independent foreign marketing?

In the interview, Kahn also explained that independent foreign marketing of the German record champions could not be ruled out in the future.

"There should be no ban on thinking about possible solutions, because none of us can currently be satisfied with the proceeds from the Bundesliga's foreign marketing."

However, Kahn also said that he considered the current distribution key for income from foreign marketing to be “a good measure that reflects the generation of income on the one hand and the necessary solidarity on the other”.

35 percent of the income currently goes equally to all Bundesliga clubs, the other 65 percent is distributed depending on the performance in the European Cup.
