The goalkeeper of the German national soccer team, Almuth Schult, is moving to the USA after the European soccer championships in the summer.
As the NDR and the "Wolfsburger Allgemeine" report, the 30-year-old is hired by Angel City FC, a professional club from Los Angeles.
Accordingly, she signed a contract until 2023.
"It has always been a dream of mine to play in the NWSL," said Schult of the "Wolfsburger Allgemeine": "It's not just about football, but also about impact - and about supporting women.
I'm proud to be part of the team and look forward to joining in the summer.«
Angel City FC is considered the club for female Hollywood stars, with Natalie Portman, Uzo Aduba, Jennifer Garner, Sophia Bush and Eva Longoria among the founders.
Also in attendance are former US internationals Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, tennis star Serena Williams and basketball player Candace Parker.
»It was always my dream to play in the USA.«
Schult, who won the European Championship in 2013 and won the Olympic Games in 2016, had previously been under contract with German club VfL Wolfsburg, but rejected an offer to extend.
Schult won numerous titles with VfL, this season the team has a good chance of winning the championship, meets FC Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League and is also in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup.
Angel City FC is starting this year for the first time in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the women's professional league in the USA.
The club reportedly sold 16,000 season tickets for its first season.
»It was always my dream to play in the USA one day.
The league there is as balanced as none in Europe," Schult told NDR.
»Every team there has national players from home and abroad.
That's why it's very attractive to play there as a goalkeeper.
You are challenged in every game and you don't know beforehand which club will win the championship."
Schult gave birth to twins in 2020 and then talked about difficulties in reconciling family and work.
After the announcement of her departure from VfL, there was speculation about the end of the Olympic champion's career.
