Van Gaal stressed that he still has strength and energy to coach the Dutch national team.
The former Bayern coach will continue to do so - but after the 2022 World Cup* in November and December it will be over for him: Ronald Koeman will be his successor and will take up the post on January 1, 2023.
Koeman's contract will be valid until the 2026 World Cup, the Dutch association announced on Wednesday.
"A little over a year and a half ago I certainly didn't leave the Dutch national team out of dissatisfaction," Koeman said in the statement.
