Great honor: Lifetime Achievement Award given to six groundbreaking athletes Israel today

The Wingate Institute celebrated its 65th anniversary tonight (Thursday), and during the festive event, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports was awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in the various categories.

Hundreds of athletes and present and past athletes, heads of branches, the management of the institute, the heads of the Olympic Committee, the Minister of Sports, Hili Trooper and former President of the State Reuven Rivlin honored their presence.

The current president, Yitzhak Herzog, sent a recorded greeting.

The award in the athlete category was given to the former basketball player with the achievements of the Israeli and Maccabi Tel Aviv teams, Miki Berkovich, for being a groundbreaking and inspiring athlete in sports and Israeli society. "I did not think I would get it now.

The former coach of the Ramat Hasharon basketball team, Orna Ostfeld, also received great honor, due to being a basketball player and a groundbreaking coach in the women's basketball industry.

In addition to them, the coach of the Israeli Paralympic swimming team, Yaakov Beninson, also received the award, for being a groundbreaking coach who raised many generations of Paralympic medalists, world champions and more.

The Izzy Shretzky Football Manhood Award winner took the prize for his many years of contribution and for being a visionary who influenced and changed the face of the city of Kiryat Shmona, while doing significant and extensive social work.

The award was also given to the veteran athletics coach and founder of the Negev Athletics Association, Baruch Shapira, for being a physical education teacher, a local authority member and an inspiring athletics coach and has been an example and role model for more than 30 years.
