The World Olympic Association (WoA) refused to accept the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
A statement published on the Association’s website confirmed the declaration of support for the Olympic Charter signed by athletes at the World Olympic Forum in 2015, in which they committed to oppose any political or governmental interference in the independence of sports organizations, stressing that “decisions regarding competition or not must be taken by each athlete individually and must be based on the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter.
It is noteworthy that on February 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended sports federations to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions.
