The Nokia Arena is the home arena of the Tampereen Ilves and Tappara Ice Hockey Clubs, and the Men's Ice Hockey World Championships will take place here from May 13th to 29th, 2022.

Tampere in Finland - In the fall of 2017, construction work began on the Nokia Arena in Tampere.

The official opening took place four years later on December 15, 2021 as part of a celebration.

The first ice hockey game had already taken place on December 3 with the match between Tampereen Ilves and Tappara.

The costs for the construction project amounted to 124 million euros, the responsible architect was Daniel Libeskind.

The city of Tampere owns 40 percent of the hall, the other 60 percent is held by various companies.

The Nokia Arena can accommodate up to 13,500 spectators for ice hockey events and 15,000 for concerts.

In the hall, the games of the two home teams Tampereen Ilves and Tappara regularly take place.

The building is centrally located at Sorinkatu 3 and is part of a larger construction project.

The multi-purpose arena received its name after Nokia acquired the naming rights for a period of five years.

Previously it was called Tampere Deck Arena.

It was designed as a state-of-the-art venue for future sports, music and business events.

The Nokia Arena as a venue for events and services

The Nokia Arena is an attractive venue 365 days a year.

Built directly above the railway tracks, it offers its visitors excellent transport connections right in the center of Tampere.

The Arena complex includes the Hotel Lapland Hotels Arena with 273 rooms in various categories, conference rooms, casino, sauna world and roof terrace.

The hall itself is equipped with shops and a total of 22 different restaurants, lounges and bars.

Some serve their guests daily, others only during events.

Viewers can look forward to the latest digital technology when looking at screens with 1.2 billion pixels.

The multi-purpose hall also has 63 suites that can accommodate up to 40 people for events, workshops or parties.

If you are interested in the architecture of the hall and would like to visit parts of the arena that are closed to the public, you can join a guided tour.

The same applies to fans of the two ice hockey clubs that play their matches in Finland's top ice hockey league "Liiga" here in their home stadium.

The Nokia Arena website provides an overview of the hall and a seating plan.

The Nokia Arena as the venue for the men's Ice Hockey World Championship

From May 13 to May 29, 2022, the 85th Men's Ice Hockey World Championship will take place in Finland.

Venues are the multi-purpose halls in Helsinki and Tampere, reigning world champion is Canada.

While all Group A preliminary round matches are played at Helsingin Jäähalli in Helsinki, Group B features eight teams at the Nokia Arena in Tampere: Austria, Finland, Great Britain, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the USA.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine severely shook the original plan.

Those responsible at the world association sanctioned Russia and Belarus and completely excluded both teams from participating, while the originally planned games in the Hartwall Arena were unceremoniously moved to the Helsingin Jäähalli.

Reason for this decision: Three Russian oligarchs who are majority owners of Helsinki Halli.

The following matches will take place in the Nokia Arena during the Ice Hockey World Championships:

  • all group B preliminary round matches in the period from 13 to 24 May

  • two quarter-finals on May 26th

  • both semi-finals on May 28th

  • Match for third place and the final on May 29th
