Borussia Dortmund announces the transfer of Nico Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg.

BVB snatched another central defender from Bayern Munich.

Dortmund – Nico Schlotterbeck has made his decision: The German international will switch from SC Freiburg to Borussia Dortmund for the coming season.

The central defender will receive a five-year contract with BVB until 2027. This was announced by Dortmund after the medical check-up on Monday.

After Niklas Süle from FC Bayern, Schlotterbeck is the second DFB star to switch to the eight-time German champions in the summer.

The Bavarians, who are looking for a successor for Süle, were reportedly also interested in the 22-year-old.

"Nico Schlotterbeck is a young German international who has made great progress.

His profile fits BVB perfectly,” said sports director Michael Zorc, who will retire in a few weeks.

Neither club gave any information about the transfer terms.

Most recently, however, a sum of around 20 million euros was in the room.

"I want to create clarity for SC Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and myself personally," said Nico Schlotterbeck, adding: "It's important to me on the home stretch of the season to concentrate fully on the remaining three games with SC Freiburg, which we will hopefully successfully contest, to be able to concentrate.

After that, I'm looking forward to the new tasks with BVB.” Schlotterbeck is fighting for a place in the Champions League with Freiburg and is in the DFB Cup final against RB Leipzig on May 21.

Zorc's successor Sebastian Kehl explains the transfer as follows: "Nico's path reminds me of my own, because I also came to BVB from Freiburg as a young national player of his age.

I hope that Dortmund will be just as much a new home for him as it was for me.” Schlotterbeck has huge potential, says Kehl.

"He didn't choose the economically best offer from among the many interested clubs, but deliberately chose BVB in order to continue developing here as a sport."

Among other things, FC Bayern Munich was said to be interested in Schlotterbeck.

As with the failed contract extension with Niklas Süle, Bayern are now losing out to BVB.

"We are very pleased that we were able to convince Nico of our path and that he made a clear commitment to Borussia Dortmund by signing a long-term contract," said Kehl.

The 1.91 meter tall defender has played 53 competitive games for Freiburg so far.

As a loan player, Schlotterbeck made 18 appearances for 1. FC Union Berlin in the 2020/21 season.

He made his national team debut last March.
