A torch toss towards the stands could have consequences for winner Richarlison after Everton 1-0 against Chelsea.

According to the BBC and the Guardian, both the Premier League club, which is threatened with relegation, and the English Football Association FA want to investigate the incident on Sunday evening.

Richarlison had picked up a blue pyro flare off the turf after scoring at Goodison Park in the 46th minute and threw it back onto the stands.

Where this ended up is unclear.

According to the BBC, the Brazil international threw the torch in an area off the pitch where there were no fans.

Pyrotechnics are banned in English football stadiums.

Everton defend Richarlison

Referee Kevin Friend failed to respond to Richarlison's torch throw after the scene.

"We are looking into this," announced Everton FC, "but as far as we can see Richarlison tried to throw them off the field," said a club spokesman.

According to the British tabloid The Sun, he could face a three-game penalty.

With five games remaining, Everton, coached by Frank Lampard, are 18th in the Premier League with 32 points.

Chelsea is third (66 points).
