The penultimate decision-making game for World Cup participation took place in Qatar on Monday evening.

The duel between Australia and Peru ended in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Doha - On November 21st this year, the soccer World Cup will begin in Qatar.

After the Welsh national team bought the last European ticket for the tournament, the 31st of the 32 participating teams has now been confirmed.

The first of two intercontinental playoffs took place on Monday night, when Australia and Peru met at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in host country Qatar.

The decision came after a dramatic penalty shootout.

World Cup qualification: Australia with hurdles in the decider against Peru

For some national teams, the road to World Cup participation is particularly rocky.

The Peruvians dueled in their same qualifying group with the other South American Conmebol members.

After 18 qualifying games, the "Blanquirroja" ended up in fifth place in the table, which meant the decisive game against an Asian representative.

The Australians, on the other hand, had to beat a group of five in the second round of Asian qualifying to play in one of two groups of six for the first two World Cup places in the third round.

However, the “Socceroos” only finished third and thus had to play a first decider against the third from the second Asian group, the United Arab Emirates.

Australia prevailed 2-1 in Doha on 7 June to qualify for the final knockout game against South America's Peru.

Australia coach takes keeper Ryan out for penalties - substitute keeper comes on for the third time

The last and decisive match was a playful disappointment over long stretches.

The first 90 minutes ended goalless, even in extra time neither team got the ball behind the line.

And that despite good opportunities.

Just before the final whistle, Australia's experienced coach dug into his bag of tricks and substituted his first-choice keeper and captain, Mathew Ryan.

He brought on Andrew Redmayne from Sydney FC for the penalty shoot-out - and it did wonders.

The 33-year-old Redmayne, who has spent his entire career at various clubs Down Under, left no stone unturned on his third international cap.

He jumped around a lot on the line, turned his back on the shooter or waved his arms.

The Peruvians looked impressed, despite having the advantage after Australia's first missed penalty.

First, former Hoffenheim player Luis Advíncula was irritated by Redmayne's movements, he put his penalty on the left post and gave the Australians hope again.

The fifth Peruvian shooter was Alex Valera, he could have equalized to 5:5.

But Redmayne tirelessly jumped around on the goal line - and actually saved the crucial penalty.

The jubilation knew no bounds, the around 500 Australians who traveled with them celebrated their team.

However, the approximately 10,000 Peruvians who had traveled to Qatar could not believe it.

On Tuesday (June 14) the game between Costa Rica and New Zealand will decide who completes the field of participants in the controversial World Cup in the desert.

Australia meets in Group D from Denmark, Tunisia and the defending champions France.
