For the second time, Simon Geschke ventured into a breakaway group. It was not enough to win the stage again, but the 36-year-old is the eighth German in the history of the Tour de France to put on the mountain jersey.

Luxembourg's Bob Jungels has won the ninth stage of the 109th Tour de France.

The 29-year-old won on Sunday after 192.9 kilometers from Aigle to Châtel Les Portes du Soleil single-handedly ahead of Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo.

In the days before, the breakaways waited to be caught by the peloton shortly before the finish line, this time Jungels was able to defend his lead.

Last year's Slovenian winner Tadej Pogačar, who crossed the finish line a good 50 seconds back with rival Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark, remains in the yellow jersey.

Simon Geschke, who was part of a large breakaway group for a long time, conquered the mountain jersey.

After the rest day on Monday, Geschke will drive through the Alps next week in the famous white jersey with the red dots.

Geschke is the first German professional cyclist to wear a mountain jersey since 2016. Back then, Paul Voß wore it for one day.

Overall, the 36-year-old is the eighth German to lead the mountains classification.
