50 years after the severe attack during the Olympic Games, when members of the "Black September" organization murdered the athletes, a breakthrough has come in relation to the grieving families

On the way to an agreement?

The German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports today (Wednesday) that the German government is expected to announce its intention to pay compensation to the families of victims of the terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics in 1972, in which 11 Jewish athletes were murdered.

According to the report, a decision was made "following a desire to define the serious consequences for the relatives of the victims in material terms."

No information was provided on the amount of the German compensation offer.

"These days, trust talks are being held with the representatives of the victims' families."

It was reported that Anki Spitzer, the widow of fencing coach Andrey Spitzer, canceled at short notice the visit to Munich planned for this week, because she does not want to go to Germany as long as the question of compensation is not resolved.

It was noted that the relatives had already received payments in 1972 and 2002, but these were small and declared by the German side as humanitarian aid in order to avoid admitting guilt.

It is not clear if the families will accept the new offer.

Government sources say the talks could be concluded by the end of the week.

It is important to remember that all of this comes just before the ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the original date that was supposed to take place on September 5, a ceremony in the presence of the presidents of the countries, the families of the victims, athletes and the heads of the Olympic committees.
