After a strong comeback, Rory McIlroy took the PGA Tour Championship title and pocketed $18 million in prize money.

After 2016 and 2019, the Northern Irishman became the first golfer to win the final tournament of the top 30 professionals in the FedExCup rankings for the third time.

McIlroy finished 21 under par on Sunday (local time) in Atlanta, just one shot ahead of American Scottie Scheffler and South Korean Sungjae Im, who shared second place.

Going into the fourth and final round, McIlroy was six shots behind top seed Scottie Scheffler.

However, Scheffler blundered with a 73 round.

With 66 strokes in the fourth round and previously only 63 strokes in the third round, McIlroy managed to catch up.

McIlroy then went to Scheffler's family and told his father, "Sorry, he deserved it, he had an amazing year," to which Scheffler's father replied, "So did you."

“It's a turbulent time for men's golf right now.

I'm trying to defend what I think is the best place to play top golf whenever I can," McIlroy said of his title win.

The Northern Irishman is considered a great advocate of the PGA Tour.

Several other top golfers have joined the Saudi Arabia-sponsored LIV tournament series and filed lawsuits against the PGA Tour after being suspended.
