Mainz 05 fought their way up to fifth place in the Bundesliga table by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Coach Bo Svensson's team defeated Borussia 1-0 (0-0).
Gladbach moved away from the leading group and is now ninth.
The first half was full of chances.
Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer prevented twice in the early stages, first he saved against Silvan Widmer (6th minute), then shortly afterwards against Leandro Barreiro (7th).
On the other hand, it was Marcus Thuram, who initially played an inaccurate counterattack instead of trying to do it himself (34') - and then shot the keeper (43').
Florian Neuhaus also hit the bar (30th).
The only goal of the game came early in the second half.
Gladbach's defender Ko Itakura first wrestled Karim Onisiwo to the ground, the emergency brake was punished with a red card (53').
Aarón Martín Caricol then converted the free kick that was due, which was worth seeing, directly to the lead for Mainz.
Shortly before the end, Gladbach cheered for the supposed equalizer, but the assistant referee raised the flag: Lards Stindl had been offside before his goal (86').
So it stayed at 1-0.
