US Open: "My game, I assume it", says Garcia

Eliminated Thursday in the semi-finals of the US Open where she did not manage to reproduce against Ons Jabeur the so aggressive and risky game which had allowed her to fly over the start of the tournament, Caroline Garcia does not budge: "My game, I assume it",

How do you explain this complicated start to the match?

To discover

  • US Open: men's schedule

  • US Open: ladies' schedule

It was badly pinned, the start of the match was not in my favor.

One or two points where I frankly didn't go there, like still a lot of points afterwards.

The arm didn't pass as well and with my style of play, it made me sometimes miss my target: the ball escaped a little or took the net.

We had a very solid match, she managed to read what I was producing and my game was less effective than usual.

Were your difficulties more mental or physical?

Mostly it's mental.

But when there are a lot of sequences, the stress also takes a lot of energy and, we're not going to lie to each other, in the 14th game in a row, there is bound to be a little physical fatigue.

Although I have made good progress physically.

there is a lot of disappointment, a little frustration, but today I went anyway, I produced my game even if it was horrible to take winning passings

How do we manage this stress?

We're heading into the unknown, but that's the whole charm of advancing in tournaments, of going further and further in the Grand Slams.

You know you're in the semi-finals, that you're getting closer to the end of the tournament.

What can you do to go one more step?

It's full of positive stress.

A few months ago, I would have liked to be where I am today.

So, inevitably, there is a lot of disappointment, a little frustration, but today I still went there, I produced my game even if it was horrible to take winning passings.

But a few years ago, I wouldn't have had that attitude.

My game, I assume it: when it works a little less well, it's a little less pretty to watch, but when it works, we've heard good things about it.

What conclusions do you draw from the last few weeks?

It's a Grand Slam half and a Masters 1000 won in Cincinnati.

An increasingly clear game in my head, which is effective when I manage to let my arm pass and I am physically well.

There is still plenty of room for improvement in many areas.

Today there was no long line backhand.

The long line forehand didn't work either!

It's also a lot of enthusiasm for the future.

The score is severe, did you feel helpless against the 5th in the world?

Yes, there was frustration.

I was trailing 6-1, 4-1, I couldn't find the solution.

She cut me off, she read my game well and suddenly I engaged in longer exchanges... But I couldn't hit as I wanted, to free myself on my legs and that's not it anymore which frustrated me.

She was in the right flow, the right timing.

I'm sure we'll play again, we'll see if she manages to be on such a good day and I'll try to be on a better one.

But she had a super solid year: if there had been points at Wimbledon, she would have been ranked higher than that.

So congratulations to her and in charge of revenge.
