Berlin – Germany starts the knockout phase at the European Basketball Championship.

The DBB team will face Montenegro in the round of 16.

The German basketball players thrilled the Cologne crowd in the preliminary round with four wins from five games against France, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lithuania and Hungary.

Only against defending champion Slovenia was there a narrow defeat.

In the "death knockout phase" we continue to Berlin, where Montenegro is waiting on Saturday at 6 p.m.

When captain Dennis Schröder and the German basketball players threw their first baskets in the Berlin Arena, the national coach issued an urgent warning.

“We were just in the death group, now comes the death knockout phase.

Any team can beat any other team,” said Herbert ahead of Saturday's round of 16 of the European Championship against the Montenegrins.

After the great preliminary round in Cologne, the final round in the capital is now getting really serious.

"This is a very good basketball team with an incredible basketball culture," said Herbert, who drew the comparison to Bosnia-Herzegovina, which made life difficult for Germany in the group stage.

"They are very physical, big and play hard," said the coach.

However, it is also true that Montenegro lost the top games in its Group A against Spain and Turkey.

It would be important, especially with regard to defense, that Herbert can fall back on Nick Weiler-Babb on Saturday.

The defense specialist injured his shoulder in the only preliminary round loss against Slovenia on Tuesday.

The naturalized American from Bayern Munich was rested against Hungary, as were Schröder and Daniel Theis.

In the meantime he traveled to the Isar for treatment.

"With him," says Herbert, "you have to look from day to day."
