With a two-point lead over pursuer Freiburg, Union Berlin is now at the top of the Bundesliga. A header from Paul Jäckel was enough for the guests, while VfB failed several top-class players.

At the end of the 9th Bundesliga match day, VfB Stuttgart lost 0:1 (0:0) against Union Berlin.

The Stuttgart slip on a direct relegation zone, Union can defend the place at the top of the table.

The starting position before the start of the game could not have been more different: here the Stuttgart team, who are still without a win after eight games, there the table leaders from Berlin.

After referee Bastian Dankert kicked off, it was the team from the bottom of the table that set the tone: VfB had more possession of the ball, won most of the duels and had good opportunities.

After a free kick, Dan-Axel Zagadou maneuvered the ball in the direction of the Union goal, but Frederik Rönnow reacted brilliantly and deflected the ball to the post (14th minute).

In the 35th minute it was Stuttgart's central attacker Serhou Guirassy who headed a Tiago Tomás cross just wide of the goal (35').

Goal Jackel, post Mavropanos

In the second half, Union became a little researcher, but VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller remained almost unemployed.

It only became dangerous in the 76th minute and the visitors promptly scored: Paul Jäckel headed in after a corner and was unstoppable.

VfB were desperately fighting for an equalizer and were unlucky: Konstantinos Mavropanos hit the post out of the turmoil (79').

Guirassy then saw yellow-red (82nd).

VfB will continue in the league next Saturday against VfL Bochum (3:30 p.m.).

Union Berlin has three home games ahead of them: in the Conference League against Malmö FF (Thursday, 9 p.m.), in the league against Borussia Dortmund (Sunday, 5:30 p.m.) and in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Heidenheim (Tuesday, 19 October, 8:45 p.m.).
