Ligue 1: four coaches fired after 10 days, a first in the 21st century

After Lyon, Brest and Auxerre, Reims is already the 4th club to separate from its coach this season when only ten days have been

In the fall, the coaches are decidedly packed in spades!

The layoff of the Rémois Oscar Garcia, formalized this Thursday, already brings to four the number of technicians dismissed after only ten days.

The Lyonnais Peter Bosz opened this sad ball on Saturday 8 October.

Forty-eight hours later, it was the turn of Brest and Auxerre to signify the door to Michel Der Zakarian and Jean-Marc Furlan.

The Champagne club is, therefore, coming to enlarge this list.

It is not uncommon to see clubs dusting off their benches (or technicians leaving) during the fall.

But four coaches fired at this early stage of the season, the case is not common.

In the 21st century, this is even an unprecedented situation.

It is also, according to statistician OPTA, the first time that four teams have changed coaches on the same day during a Ligue 1 season. The previous record was two.

By way of comparison, during the previous exercise, the eviction of Claude Puel, the first “victim” listed in the elite, took place after seventeen days.

He had not survived a rout at home against Rennes (0-5).

In 2020-2021, Vincent Hognon (Metz) left office on October 12, before Stéphane Jobard was sacked by Dijon on November 5.

In 2019-2020, Ghislain Printant was dismissed from Saint-Étienne on October 4, Sylvinho from OL on the 7th, and Alain Casanova left Toulouse on the 10th. In 2018-2019, Bordeaux had shown Gustavo Poyet the exit from … on August 17.

Miguel Cardoso (Nantes), Leonardo Jardim (Monaco) and Antoine Kombouaré (Guingamp) then left before mid-November (13th day).

In a particular season where four teams will be relegated in order to reduce the championship to 18 clubs from 2023-2024, the leaders tend to lose patience.

Nothing, not even the payment of the inevitable severance pay for clubs with yet fragile finances, tempers this propensity to press the ejection seat.

On closer inspection, this cruel game of musical chairs proceeds from the patent absence of results.

Lyon's 9th place badly masks a litany of failures translated into facts by 4 defeats in a row, then a draw against Toulouse.

Reims ranks 15th, Auxerre 16th and Brest brings up the rear.

The case of the Icaunais club is a little different because the dismissal of Furlan was recorded after the finger of honor sent by the technician to the public of Clermont.

The latter had also recently insisted in an interview he had given us on the precariousness of the coaching profession.

“Twenty-five years ago, coaches could stay four or five years in a club, he recalled.

The era when the Guy Roux and others were the real bosses and decided their own fate is over.

It generates a lot of anxiety for us.

Since 1998, there has been no season without departure or change of coach.

The three “quietest” seasons with only three coaches replaced over the whole year were 2005-2006, 2009-2010 and 2005-2006.
