The track and field athletes from the middle school in Altenerding were allowed to represent the Free State as Bavarian champions at the final of the International Lake Constance School Cup in Lindau.
Altenerding – Bad luck from illness and injuries ruined the chances of a top place early on.
Eight school teams from Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thurgau, St. Gallen, Vorarlberg and Bavaria competed in the comparison competition between Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the boys III/2 competition class.
In the team around sports teacher Florian Felkel and vice president Kai Braun, three students were missing due to illness, so that Altenerding could only start with nine instead of the usual ten students.
In the competition itself, two other students, who were also registered for the 800 meters due to their good previous performances, were injured.
At that point, at the latest, it was clear that the result would be far below the team's potential.
With 15,106 points, the people from Altenerding were well ahead of the second Bavarian participant, the Mittelschule Weißenburg (13,916), in seventh place.
They also fell just 344 points short of fifth place, which they had hoped for despite missing out through injury.
With the performances from the state finals last July (15,705 points), the bronze medal would have been possible.
Gold went to the Realschule plus at the Römervilla Mülheim-Kärlich (Rhineland-Palatinate), before the Gosau school (Switzerland) and the Stefan-Andres-Realschule plus Schweich (Rhineland-Palatinate).
"Despite the training deficit, some students managed to surpass their best performances again," said Felkel happily.
Bedirhan Özdemir hit the ball a great 9.37 meters, Valentin Bach ran the 75 meters in a good 10.07 seconds.
Sebastian Kaehler Pardo (1453) and Alex Grande (1452) contributed the most points in the three-way battle to the overall result.
Kaehler Pardo's 9.80 seconds over 75 meters and Grande's 55.50 meters in long throw and 5.24 meters in long jump were also outstanding.
Bach ran the 800 meters in a good 2:34 minutes.
The track and field athletes from the Altenerding middle school want to do everything possible to be back in the final of the Bodenseeschulcup in autumn 2023.
