Judoka Fabian Kansy recommended himself for the next major tournaments at the U23 European Championships.

But it wasn't enough for an individual medal.

Sarajevo/Neufahrn

– Fabian Kansy from Neufahrn more than justified his nomination for the Judo U23 European Championships at the weekend.

At the title fights in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, he won the silver medal with the German mixed team and finished fifth in the individual competition in his weight class up to 90 kilograms.

The 21-year-old student kept the upper hand in the first three rounds and only failed in the main round semi-final against the Ukrainian Marat Kryzhanskyi.

In the small final for bronze, Neufahrner, who was fighting for Abensberg in the Bundesliga, lost to Frenchman Aleksa Mitrovic after a fight time of 2:20 minutes.

This put Fabian Kansy in the thankless fifth place.

"It's a step forward for me, even though I just missed out on a medal.

I hope this will help me get more appearances in the big international tournaments next year.”

The 21-year-old judoka, who trains at the performance center in Großhadern, was happy about a silver medal with the German team in the U23 mixed team competition.

There Kansy came in the first round fight against France in the weight class up to 90 kilos.

Neufahrner lost to Francis Damier after a little more than two minutes of fighting with a hip throw.

The German team still narrowly won 4:3 and advanced to the semi-finals, where they easily defeated the Hungarians 4:1.

Kansy just watched from the edge of the mat.

Because of the stress of five individual fights and because he was slightly injured, teammate Johann Lenz was allowed to fight in the category up to 90 kilograms.

Even when his team lost 4-1 in the final against Turkey, the student was no longer able to intervene,

This is how the individual competition went for Fabian Kansy

In the individual competition, Fabian Kansy was able to win his preliminary round pool.

In the opener against Augustas Slyteris of Lithuania, the German scored a waza-ari score for a holding technique and took the lead over time.

In round two, the Israeli Daniel Bershadsky even went into overtime after four minutes before Neufahrner was awarded a score for Ko-uchi-gari (small inner sickle) and won the duel.

In the quarterfinals, Kansy dominated the fight against the Austrian Aslan Papoyan and ended it with a foot technique after almost two minutes.

In the semifinals against the Ukrainian Kryzhanskyi, against whom Neufahrner had already lost in Slovenia two weeks ago, the winning streak was then stopped.

In the small final for bronze against Mitrovic, the TUM student wanted to throw a deep throw, which the Frenchman cleverly countered and won in the end.
