The soccer player Emma Houston decided to abandon one of the most popular sports in the world, all this to switch to breakdancing, when she could participate in the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. Houston, played soccer, for the girls' team of Falkirk Ladies, but fell in love with dance and began to study contemporary dance in Dundee and then at the Royal Academy of Dance in London.
Now she is the hope for an Olympic medal in flying that will make its debut in two years.
"I trained in soccer, but I'm very light and small. It became more difficult to strengthen my muscles, to compete against strong players, so I was much more prone to injury. At the same time, I discovered dance and the breadth of opportunities within it, and I discovered that I am able to explore my body movements in different ways." , Houston said, "It was a hard choice to let go of football, but I got carried away with the dance and all the things I could discover in it. I discovered it all by myself, this whole underground culture, and I kind of liked that I found something that was mine."
Houston, nicknamed 'Shortbread', is one of the few athletes to be sponsored by the sport's new governing body, Breaking GB.
The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics has resulted in Breaking GB recently being awarded £135,000 in funding from UK Sport. This weekend the European Breakdancing Championships will be held in Manchester. Breakdancing involves dancers going head-to-head, with the winners decided by judges who score them based on technique, performance and creativity.
