WTA Masters: for Caroline Garcia, "it's a good step forward in fact"

2022-11-02T10:29:13.048Z

The Frenchwoman, who ideally started the Masters by beating Coco Gauff in the group stage, wanted to retain “the state of mind”, “the calm” which guided her, but also her good physical shape, “one of the keys to produce his aggressive game.

What satisfied you the most in your performance?

Caroline Garcia:

State of mind.

Having known how to remain calm, positive, at all times, was super important.

My first game, I start it pretty well, but in the end I get broken.

But we know that in these matches, it's always better to start well.

I stayed calm, trying to create an opportunity for myself to unbreak her, which I managed to do.

It gave me a lot of confidence.

And at 5-4 I knew how to be opportunistic, to get this first set.

In the second, when I got unbroken, the whole public got into it.

She redoubled her aggressiveness, put me under pressure... I could have become a little more negative, but I kept my line of conduct and I think I did it well.

It was the most important.

In the end, it was really a good game from me, solid.

We felt you were in much better shape than in recent weeks...

The physical aspect was one of the keys.

We tried to set up a program that allows me to adapt to indoor conditions, to fairly late match schedules, and at the same time to recover well.

Today, I felt good on the court, quite explosive.

But that's what I really need to produce my game.

Did you expect to find such a level of play so quickly?

I had no particular expectations in this regard.

There were so many parameters... tackling the Masters, the first group match, the stress maybe too, the preparation that we tried to do as best as possible, but which wasn't ideal either.

But during the last training sessions, something was going on, I found relaxation in my game, the good timing to take the ball early, I took the speed of the opponent.

That's what I manage to do in my tennis and I have to stick to it.

I have to manage to have this letting go, to gain confidence.

You will have to redouble your aggression on Thursday against world number 1 Iga Swiatek...

Compared to my style of play, that's what works best, yes.

Against her, this will be an important parameter.

When she has time to set up her game, she is very complicated to play.

She knows how to change direction well, she moves very well on the court with her slides, it looks like she's covering two courts, when you're only covering one.

She is very impressive.

It will be up to me to disturb her as much as possible, to set up my game.
