The winning streak of world number one Iga Świątek has surprisingly broken.
At the WTA finals in Fort Worth, Texas, the Polish player Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus lost 2:6, 6:2, 1:6 and missed the final of the final tournament for the best tennis players of the year.
Świątek had dominated the group matches like no other player in 15 years.
The 21-year-old had only given up 13 games in her three group games, the fewest since the Belgian Justine Henin in 2007 (11), as the WTA announced before the semifinals.
For Świątek it was also the first defeat after 15 wins in a row against a player from the top ten.
Świątek's opponent in the semifinals Sabalenka meets Caroline Garcia from France in the final, who previously beat Maria Sakkari from Greece 6-3, 6-2.
Garcia failed in 2017 in her first and previously only participation in the semifinals.
