Recap: Maccabi Haifa vs Maccabi Tel Aviv 1:3 (Sport1)
Maccabi Haifa set a precedent in Israeli football by becoming the first team to win the championship in a season in which it participated in the group stage of the Champions League. Its first challenge in the 2023/24 season, already without Barak Behar, will be to set another precedent: the first Israeli team to qualify twice in a row for the Champions League. But the road there will be even more arduous.
Last season, the Israeli champions benefited from Russia's exclusion from UEFA factories and the shifts caused by Real Madrid's Champions League win, and thus advanced automatically to the second round of qualification. This time, Maccabi Haifa will enter the first round on July 11-12, so that the vacation time will also be shorter.
However, Haifa's ranking jumped from 7 points to 13 thanks to the successful European campaign, which means that they will be ranked in the first qualifying round and possibly in the second, if Ludogorets does not win the Bulgarian championship and Copenhagen is not crowned in Denmark.

Not all leagues have already crowned champions, but among those that are known and clearly will not be ranked, Rakow, who made history in Poland, and Sweden's Haken can be marked as dangerous opponents in the first round. Farol, which leads the Romanian league, is also an unranked opponent that is best avoided at this stage. Much more convenient options are Valmiera, which made history in Latvia, Struga, which won its first North Macedonian championship, Arena, which also celebrated its first championship in Northern Ireland, or Swift Sprange, which emulated them in Luxembourg. Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands and the Maroon Spartans from Malta are also on the list.
In the second round, the possibilities will be similar, with champions making it through the first round. The draw for this round will be held the day after the draw of the first round, so that each team will know which meeting its next opponent will come from. Finnish Helsinki, Ireland's Shamrock Rovers and Slovakian Olimpija Ljubljana are among the new options here, should Maccabi Haifa be ranked. If not, there is a chance to meet Dinamo Zagreb, Ferencváros and Molde.
In the third qualifying round, as mentioned, Maccabi Haifa will no longer be ranked and then the story will be different. Young Boys Bern and AEK Athens join at this stage, and there will also be Turkish champions and other top-seeds who make it through the first rounds. In the playoffs, the champions of Belgium and Ukraine will also be added to this group.

Elimination in the first round would send the Greens into Conference League qualification, as happened following the loss to Kairat two years ago. If eliminated in the second qualifying round, Maccabi Haifa will move to the secondary and play in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. Elimination in the third qualifying round of the Champions League means a move to the Europa League play-offs and in any case a warm winter, as elimination in the play-offs is worth a ticket to the group stage in the factory below.
As you know, this will be the last year of the plant in its current form. In 2024/25, the group stage of the Champions League will increase to 36 teams and as far as Israel is concerned, this is another ticket that becomes available for the qualifying participants: currently only four champions can qualify through qualifying and following the change the number will increase to five.
