Victor Wembanyama's performance in France (YouTube)
"Historical implications," is how the U.S. described Tuesday night's lottery that gave San Antonio the first pick in the draft. The Spurs won't pass up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to select Victor Wembanyama, arguably the most exciting talent to come to the NBA since LeBron James.
Wembanyama (19, 2.19m) has so far met all expectations and delivered a wonderful season in France. The child prodigy who can do pretty much anything on the court leads one of Europe's strongest leagues in points per game (21.6), rebounds per game (10.5), points per game (26.2) and blocks per game (3.1).
The draft had previously changed the fortunes of San Antonio, which received the first pick in 1987 and David Robinson, and Tim Duncan with the first pick in 1997. Tonight, owner Peter J. Holt couldn't hide his excitement when he realized his team had won the promising talent, and pounded the table with joy. "It's going to be amazing," he said, "We already had a bright future ahead of us, but now it's going through the moon."
