World champion Verstappen wins Formula 1 race in Monaco

It will be the first time the race has been held in Monaco since it was opened in 1986. The last time the Grand Prix was held in the principality was in 1986, when it was held on the same circuit.

World champion Max Verstappen has won the Formula 1 classic in Monaco. The 25-year-old Dutchman celebrated a start-to-finish victory in the Principality that was never in jeopardy and finished second in his Red Bull ahead of Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.

Monaco - Behind him, Frenchman Esteban Ocon made it to third place in the Alpine race car. On the storied street circuit, Nico Hülkenberg finished 17th in the Haas car in his adopted home.

After six rounds of the season, defending champion Verstappen continues to lead the standings by 39 points over his teammate Sergio Perez from Mexico, who was only 16th. For Verstappen, it was the fourth win of the season and the 39th overall of his career. The next Grand Prix will take place next Sunday at the gates of Barcelona in Spain. Dpa
