Cohen also wrote: "Israeli society is facing the most significant crossroads since its existence. An appeal to occupation and violence will take us to many more years of bloody conflict and to the actual end of the State of Israel, because if, after Israel defeats Hamas (and it does), we continue to occupy the Palestinians, a new Hamas will arise. Maybe by a different name, maybe in a different way, but in the smelly quagmire of the occupation only monsters can grow. Brutal monsters. Turning to the path of peace will take us on a new path. The evacuation of settlements, the end of military control over the Palestinians and the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel will mark a new era in the Middle East."

Quite a few extreme reactions were received following Nir's remarks, some of them even from celebs who argued that this man should be stripped of his citizenship and place in Gaza.
