This morning we were informed of the death of First Sergeant Dvir Barzani, 20, a soldier in the 890th Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade, who fell in combat in the northern Gaza Strip.

Barazani was a swimmer in the Greater Jerusalem Association, excelled mainly in the short rowing swims, trained until enlistment in the senior team, completed a swimming instructor course and instructed at the club. When he went on leave from the army, he would come to swim in a club.

Manu May, chairman of Greater Jerusalem who was also his coach, told Israel Hayom: "It was a big boom for us this morning. Dvir really liked swimming, everything they wrote about him is true. He was a good boy who always liked to help, a hardworking kid, who wasn't at the top of swimming, but he fit in very well with the senior team. He was a serious, responsible, kind and invested child.

"Dvir kept in touch with us all the time, always coming to visit, even after he enlisted and did an instructor course. Our last conversation was after October 7, when he called to say that he had been sent to Kibbutz Be'eri and described the sights he experienced there, he will be greatly missed."

The swimming association said: "We bow our heads after learning of the death of 20-year-old First Sergeant Dvir Barzani, may his memory be blessed." His association joined him in a mourning notice: "The family of Greater Jerusalem bows its head, pains and mourns the death of Dvir Barzani, who fell in the war for the security of the State of Israel in Gaza.

"Our beloved Dvir, you entered us seven years ago with a huge smile and since then you have not left our hearts. You've always been here for everyone! You have always loved and always made sure everyone had a good time before you had it. A kind person, a friend, a swimmer, a guide."
