Victor Wembanyama's start in the NBA looked promising. Some commentators were quick to assert that "a new era has begun - the Wembanyama era", in which the huge Frenchman (2.24m) will dominate the best league in the world. That possibility shouldn't be ruled out of hand, but 14 games into the season, with San Antonio with an unusually bad 11-3 record, Wemby has become a joke, at least on social media.
Tonight he and his teammates suffered their ninth straight loss, this time at home to the Los Angeles Clippers (124-99), with Wembanyama delivering "another game he threw away," as one user on Network X (formerly Twitter) put it. The Frenchman scored 9 points on 33% shooting from the field, with some particularly bad shots, some of which didn't hit the basket at all — "Mr. Airballs," he was referred to in another tweet.
Wemby struggled mightily on the defensive side as well, with James Harden abusing him with a series of deceptions that ended with San Antonio's lanyard seemingly losing direction. "Harden 'cooked' the rookie from Monaco," the tweets continued to snipe at Wemby, "He did him school," another bite came, followed by another: "Wembanyama enjoyed watching it from the sidelines."
