Victor Wembanyama only started out in the best league in the world at the beginning of the season, and in the meantime he is proving that the hype around him over the past two years is indeed justified, his numbers are extremely high and he is strong in the race for Rookie of the Year, along with Oklahoma's Chet Holmgren.
The San Antonio Spurs center's stat line currently stands at 18.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. But the high numbers of the French giant are not only in the statistics column, but also in a completely different place, and in dollars.
At an auction held yesterday by Sotheby's, the jersey Wombanyama wore in the second half of his first career game in the world's best league sold for a staggering $762,000. The auction house's estimates for the auction were much lower: $80,000 to $120,000, but it seems that someone in the audience thought it was a more significant piece of history.

By comparison, in 2020, the debut jersey of a player in his rookie season, Zion Williamson, when he was still considered LeBron's "successor," when the jersey was sold a month after his debut, was sold for significantly less: $80,040. The all-time record for a debut jersey belongs to Kobe Bryant, whose jersey sold in 2021 for $3.69 million. In addition to the French giant's jersey, the jerseys of No. 2 pick Scott Henderson ($19,050) and No. 3 pick Brandon Miller ($27,940) were also sold on the night of the sale.
