The funeral was first reported by the Bild newspaper. For the home game against TSG Hoffenheim, FC Bayern has planned some special actions. The official memorial service for Beckenbauer will take place a week later on 19 January at the Allianz Arena, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announcing his visit.

Numerous security staff cordoned off the area around the funeral. At 11:50 a.m., the cemetery bells rang in Munich's Obergiesing district. Beckenbauer's coffin was decorated with colourful roses.

After the death of Franz Beckenbauer, Germany international Thomas Müller is "with mixed feelings" going into Bayern's first game after the winter break against TSG Hoffenheim this Friday (20:30 CET/Sat1 and DAZN). Of course, Beckenbauer's death overshadowed everything, said the 34-year-old ahead of the first Bundesliga game of the year. Müller said it made him proud to play for FC Bayern. "It makes you aware of what special players, in this case the most special player, Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer, have played for this club, for FC Bayern, have made the club and also the country of Germany, the football country Germany, known." Müller is happy that he has been able to "wear the colours of FC Bayern for so long now". (epp/dpa)
