The legendary Streif is calling. In Kitzbühel, two downhill races and a slalom are scheduled for the coming weekend. The prize money for 2024 is higher than ever.
Kitzbühel – It's that time of year again next weekend: from Friday to Sunday (19 – 21 December), the best skiers in the world will be guests in Kitzbühel. In the Mecca of the ski circus, the absolute highlight of the season is coming up for athletes and fans. In 2024, once again in XXL format.
Record prize money in Kitzbühel
On both Friday and Saturday, the Hahnenkamm downhill will take place on the legendary "Streif", and on Sunday the slalom skiers will start on the Ganslernhang.
Those who are crowned the winner on the most famous, but probably also most brutal downhill run in the ski circus will not only receive their own gondola at the Hahnenkamm lift, but will also be royally rewarded. The prize money in Kitzbühel has never been as high as this year!

More than one million euros in prize money in Kitzbühel
The organisers will distribute a total of 1,000,050 euros to the participants of the three races next weekend. For the first time, the record sum is divided equally between the two downhill races on Friday and Saturday as well as the slalom on Sunday for the top 30 in each case.
The winner will receive 100,000 euros, the second 50,000 euros, the third 25,000 euros, and the 30th will receive 2000 euros. A total of 333,5000 euros will be distributed per race.

By way of comparison, the winners of the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen, the longest course in the World Cup, collect "only" just over 50,000 euros in prize money. This sum is prescribed by the International Ski Federation (FIS).
After the heavy crashes in Wengen, the ski scene is once again torn apart. A debate about safety and stress is raging. The program, some say, is too extensive, and refer to the double downhill races in Wengen or now in Kitzbühel. The spectacle, say others, is becoming more and more exaggerated.
Organizers are happy about XXL program – athletes warn
"You have to be able to differentiate," said the German Alpine boss Wolfgang Maier to the SID. He warned against populism, "there is not just one truth". The fateful crashes of top stars Marco Schwarz in Bormio or Alexis Pinturault and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde now in Wengen had all individual reasons, and there could be no general talk of overload here.
The organizers didn't fight back either – on the contrary! In Kitzbühel, they are happy to be able to offer a second run on the Streif instead of the poorly marketable Super-G. Even if the former Kitz winner Thomas Dreßen, who was on the verge of tears recently, thought that the classic would be "devalued" in this way. Financially, it is definitely worth it for the winners.
