Only yesterday (Monday), Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar announced that the ministry had reached agreements with the Ministry of Finance in a vote on the budget, all in light of the war expenses and the critical need to allocate enormous resources for security needs and the rehabilitation of the Gaza envelope. Among the items, it was reported that it was decided to cut across-the-board all the ministry's items without exception by about 8%, which is about NIS 180 million. It turns out on Tuesday that 20 percent of them will be cut from the budget for Olympic preparations, all this about six months before the Paris Games.
The Olympic and Paralympic committees received the announcement in the market, as this cut would hinder sending athletes to important criterion competitions, training camps, which could hurt them ahead of the biggest sporting event in the world. One source in Israeli sports told Israel Hayom: "We received a message like this in the morning that we were being cut 20 percent. We are at a critical time. In any case, the unions have had to cut back over the past year, and any further damage could be detrimental to the results of this summer."
To date, 45 Olympians and 14 Paralympics have achieved the criteria for Paris, with nearly 200 more athletes trying to do so these days, starting with the World Windsurfing Championships at the end of the month, the World Swimming Championships in Qatar next month and much more.
