The Streif is considered one of the most demanding runs in the alpine ski calendar.
There were already bad crashes in training before the Kitzbühel weekend.
Kitzbühel – Curtain up for the biggest spectacle in the Alpine ski winter: On the third weekend in January there will be two downhill runs and a slalom on the legendary Streif.
And of course there will be a lot of glamor in Kitzbühel - a number of stars have already announced their arrival.
Serious fall, serious injuries: first streaks during training
The program on the Streif is tight as usual.
Training for the speed events has been going on since Tuesday.
As a replacement for the actually planned team combination, the first of the two downhill runs is scheduled for Friday.
On Saturday there will be the Hahnenkamm race.
What had been feared became reality during the training sessions: serious injuries occurred.
During the second downhill training session on Wednesday, two ski racers were transported away by helicopter.
Barnabas Szollos, who was racing for Israel, fell heavily just behind the infamous mousetrap, hit his head on the icy slope, lost his helmet and both skis and slipped into the safety net.

Barnabas Szollos and Rémi Cuche are injured in Streif training
As the world association Fis announced in the evening, Szollos suffered several facial fractures and a concussion in the accident.
He will be operated on on Thursday in Innsbruck and his family is already with him.
The 25-year-old was treated off the track for a long time and, like Rémi Cuche (23), was rescued by helicopter.
The Swiss, nephew of the Streif record winner Didier Cuche, had stopped his run due to a knee injury.
“It looks like Rémi has torn his cruciate ligament,” Uncle Cuche said in the finish area, according to the Swiss newspaper
Blick
