At the funeral service for Franz Beckenbauer there will not only be talking and mourning - Jonas Kaufmann, a renowned opera singer, will also sing in honor of the “Emperor”.

Munich – Goosebumps are inevitable: Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann, a native of Munich, will sing at the memorial service in honor of Franz Beckenbauer on Friday (January 19th).

FC Bayern announced this on its club website last Wednesday.

Kaufmann will sing “Time to say Goodbye” at the Beckenbauer memorial service

Kaufmann is considered one of the most sought-after opera singers in the world.

The 56-year-old will sing a total of three pieces at the memorial service (from 3 p.m.).

According to the club's announcement, it will begin with "Time to say Goodbye" in the Italian version "Con te partiro".

It is not known which other pieces Kaufmann will sing.

“It is an honor for me to be able to contribute to this unique memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer.

I grew up in Munich and have been a fan of FC Bayern since I was a child.

In my opinion, Franz Beckenbauer is the greatest personality of the club and of German football as a whole; he is unrivaled as an athlete and person,” Kaufmann is quoted as saying on the German record champions’ website.

Like Beckenbauer, Kaufmann now lives in Salzburg

The greatest tenor in Munich will sing for one of the greatest Munich residents of all time on Friday.

However, there is another parallel between the two Munich-born Kaufmann and Beckenbauer.

Like the “Emperor”, Kaufmann eventually moved from the Bavarian capital to the neighboring country, Salzburg.

Kaufmann has even had Austrian citizenship since 2022.

At the memorial service, which can also be seen on TV, Bavaria's supervisory board chairman Herbert Hainer and honorary president Uli Hoeneß will also give a speech as well as Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

In contrast to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is also invited, Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder is also expected to give a speech.

It is said that out of fear of a concert of catcalls, FC Bayern are not particularly sad that Scholz is not giving a speech.
