Cologne – On Thursday evening, the German national handball team ended the first matchday in the main round of the European Handball Championship against Iceland.

In the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, an open exchange of blows and a real handball thriller developed, which the DHB team ultimately won 26:24.

Handball thriller a special game for national coach Gíslason – Wolff towers above everyone

It was a special game for national coach Alfred Gíslason because he was facing his native Iceland.

The 64-year-old was once the Icelandic national coach himself and has been coaching the German national handball team since 2020.

The family of the native Icelander was also in the hall at this special game.

In a true handball thriller, which the spectators saw in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany beat the Icelanders 26:24 and still keeps their chances of reaching the semi-finals at the home European Championships high.

The outstanding player was once again goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, who was also voted player of the game after the game.

Especially in crunch time, the German goalkeeper was the decisive man and was able to contribute to the success with numerous saves.

A hymn was played in the hall, which was similar to the Icelandic version, but sounded very choppy.

It was the wrong version that played due to a technical error.

The real anthem was supposed to follow shortly afterwards, but fans online responded to this faux pas with a lot of malice.
