There is huge sympathy worldwide for the death of Franz Beckenbauer.
There were even greetings from Pope Francis at the funeral service.
Munich – The world is mourning the emperor: After the death of Franz Beckenbauer, there is huge sympathy.
This is shown not least by the funeral service that took place on Friday afternoon in honor of the football legend in Munich's Allianz Arena.
Tens of thousands of fans gathered to say goodbye to Beckenbauer.
Many celebrities from the sports and political world were also present.
“Mia san Franz”: Hainer pays tribute to Beckenbauer at the memorial service
Already in the first few days after the death was announced on January 7th, a number of people mourned Beckenbauer.
Things got emotional at the memorial service on the stage in the arena, and not just when star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sang in memory of the emperor.
The speeches also made some eyes water.
Herbert Hainer, president of FC Bayern, said the deceased was “a role model for all generations.”
He was an eternal free spirit.
Hainer said about Beckenbauer, who was also dubbed the emperor: “FC Bayern will always remain an empire and forever.” And based on FC Bayern’s motto, “Mia san mia,” Hainer said: “Mia san Franz.”
Even Pope Francis sent greetings at the funeral service for Franz Beckenbauer.

Söder remembers Beckenbauer in his funeral speech - it gets emotional with Uli Hoeneß
Federal President Steinmeier said that Beckenbauer's skills had inspired people and his friendly demeanor had won people over.
He was a role model for many.
“He was a stroke of luck for all of us.” With hard work, dedication and passion, Beckenbauer brought out the very best and represented Germany in the world.
“As a natural diplomatic talent, he became our country’s most popular ambassador.”
Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder also had his say.
Beckenbauer made the summer fairy tale immortal.
Anyone who speaks of a shadow on Beckenbauer's biography should know: "Franz Beckenbauer's light shines brightly and bulgingly and far beyond the whole." The emotional climax came with Uli Hoeneß's speech - including the strange underpants anecdote Emperor.

Finally, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, also spoke.
And he brought with him very special greetings that show how great the worldwide sympathy is for the death of Franz Beckenbauer: Marx had words from the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis himself.
“I would also like to extend greetings from Pope Francis,” Marx began his speech.
Marx “emailed him and he told me to especially greet the family and all of them.”
The Pope is “joined with us in prayer.”
Meanwhile, there was also a special tribute from the German football record champions on the occasion of the funeral ceremonies.
