Fabian Rießle, German Olympic champion in Nordic combined, is ending his career.

But he still has one last race.

Schonach – A great German winter athlete will end his career.

Fabian Rießle, who was one of the world's best for a long time, announced on his Instagram account that he was retiring from active sport.

“Dear skiing friends, in January 2009 I ran my first World Cup race in Schonach.

Right there, at the home World Cup in Schonach, I will be on the starting line for the last time on Sunday, January 28th,” was the 33-year-old’s statement.

Winter sports star declares retirement

After Eric Frenzel, who ended his career after last season, the German Nordic combined team is losing another figurehead.

His greatest success was winning the gold medal in the team competition at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Rießle became Olympic champion together with Vinzenz Geiger, Johannes Rydzek and Frenzel.

He also won two silver medals and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games and became world champion three times - twice in the team competition and once in the team sprint.

In the overall World Cup, the 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons were Rießle's best, in which he finished third in both seasons.

The Freiburg native has a total of 16 World Cup victories, nine individually and seven in the team.

In the end, however, he was no longer able to build on the successes of earlier days.

He ended the 2022/23 World Cup season early and was not initially nominated for the DSV squad in the current season.

He then moved up at the World Cup in Lillehammer, but did not manage to place among the top 30 athletes in any competition.

As a result, he had to go back to the second-class Continental Cup.

Many reactions to the resignation of Olympic champion Rießle

There were many reactions on Instagram to his announced end of career.

“Outstanding career and great athlete.

Wish you the very best for your last outing and further great experiences outside the starting line afterwards,” wrote one user.

Another also praises his career: “You can be incredibly proud of your successes.

Who can claim to have won a complete set of Olympic medals for Germany?”

It is not known what Fabian Rießle plans to do after his resignation and whether he might remain with the German Ski Association in a different role, like his long-standing colleague Eric Frenzel.

First of all, the 33-year-old will certainly spend a lot of time with his family - he just became the father of twins last year.
