Germany has everything in its own hands again at the 2024 European Handball Championships.
There will be a showdown against Croatia on Wednesday.
Cologne – The German national handball team is reporting back to the European Championships in their own country.
Thanks to the convincing win against Hungary on Monday and the Austrians' defeat against France, the DHB team has a place in the semi-finals back in their own hands.
We explain the main round of the European Handball Championship and how the DHB team could make it to the semi-finals.
Main round at the 2024 European Handball Championship: mode
Unlike in football, after the preliminary round there is no direct entry into the knockout games, but rather into a second group phase.
In the preliminary round, 12 of the 24 teams were eliminated, the remaining 12 teams will be divided into two groups.
The two groups of six are formed from the two best placed in the preliminary round groups.
This means: The teams from seasons A, B and C compete in main round group I, and the teams from D, E and F in main round group II.
Who will the DHB team face in the main round of the 2024 European Handball Championship?
Each team in the main round groups meets the four teams they did not play against in the preliminary round.
The DHB team has to play against the following teams:
Hungary (35:28)
Croatia
Austria (22:22)
Iceland (26:24)
And here comes the crux of the matter: The German national team will not play against France, the points from the preliminary round will be taken into the main round.
The Germans had zero points, while the French already have two points on the table.
The DHB team hopes to be able to celebrate again in the main round.

Main round of the 2024 European Handball Championship: How does the DHB team reach the semi-finals
Thanks to Germany's success against Hungary and Austria's defeat against France, the DHB team has reached the European Championship semi-finals back in its own hands.
With a win in the final main round game against Croatia on Wednesday, Germany would definitely move into the semifinals.
Even if there was a draw, the DHB team would still have a chance of reaching the semi-finals.
The possible opponent there has already been determined: top favorite Denmark.
France and Sweden will contest the other semi-final.
In the event of a tie, the direct comparison counts first, followed by the goal difference and goals scored.
If this does not lead to a decision, a draw is made.
