Surprise at the Australian Open.
This Wednesday, Carlos Alcaraz suffered a heavy defeat in 3h06 of play against Alexander Zverev, in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
Disturbed by the German's offensive play, the Spaniard for a long time seemed totally lost in the middle of the Rod Laver Arena, unable to find solutions to reverse the trend.
Despite a great burst of pride and a magnificent tie-break in the third round, he finally lost in four sets and therefore left the first Grand Slam of the season in the quarter-finals, a real disappointment.
From the first exchanges, the tone was set.
More impactful, Alexander Zverev offered himself a shutout break on his opponent's first throw-in, before making another break and calmly finishing with a shutout after only 29 minutes of play.
We then thought the winner of the last Wimbledon was capable, both physically and mentally, of regaining his feelings.
It was not the case.
While he benefited from his first two break points of the match at 3-3, the Spaniard completely collapsed, letting the 6th in the world slip away to win the second set.
Zverev-Medvedev in the semi-final
The third set was that of rebellion for the Murcian.
Offensive, precise and tactically intelligent, Alexander Zverev initially continued to stifle Carlos Alcaraz, who kept looking at his clan to beg for help.
As the champion that he is, he managed to regain his break from behind, before pocketing the third set after a magnificent tie-break, to the great pleasure of the Australian public.
But this return was short-lived.
Serious about his throw-in, the German made the break at the best moment, at 4-4, before concluding calmly with his throw-in. Thanks to this great victory, “Sascha” offers himself a place in the last square.
He will face the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz earlier in the day.
The other semi-final will pit Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic against young Italian Jannik Sinner.
