The list of active world champions from 2014 is getting shorter and shorter.
With a heavy heart, ex-BVB star Erik Durm is now hanging up his football boots.
Kaiserslautern – On June 1, 2014, his star rose in the German national team.
A few weeks later he was crowned 2014 world champion. Now Erik Durm has ended his career at just 31 years old.

One less world champion!
The list of still active World Cup heroes from 2014 is getting shorter and shorter.
Players like Philipp Lahm, Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger hung up their football boots a long time ago and now pass the time skiing or as TV experts.
With Erik Durm, another name must now be crossed off the list.
The 31-year-old announced the end of his career last Wednesday.
Most recently he was under contract with second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
“Erik Durm will no longer play for 1. FC Kaiserslautern with immediate effect: The 31-year-old midfielder has decided to end his football career.
Durm and the FCK have therefore agreed to terminate the contract,” the Red Devils said in a press release.
Durm was not used at the 2014 World Cup
Durm's debut in the national team came shortly before the World Cup in Brazil, in the friendly against Cameroon (2-2) at the beginning of June 2014. The then national coach Jogi Löw then nominated the former Dortmund player for the World Cup squad.
However, the full-back did not play a minute during the tournament, but he can still call himself world champion.
In total, Durm has made seven international appearances for the national team; his last appearance was in the friendly against Spain (1-0) in November 2014.

Injuries and health problems were probably the reason for Durm's end to his career
“I moved to the club I love 1.5 years ago, with the firm intention of being able to play an important role in the club and team at FCK and to end my career here after a successful time,” Durm said in a post by 1. FCK quoted on X (formerly Twitter).
However, injuries and health problems put a damper on his career plans.
“In the first year, this plan seemed to work with 27 appearances and an outstanding sporting preliminary round.
Unfortunately, since the summer of last year, I have repeatedly had to struggle with minor injuries and health problems, which have meant that I have not been able to help the FCK as much as I personally and the club would have liked," explains Durm in the post .
Durm won the DFB Cup with BVB and won the Europa League with Frankfurt
After his time at BVB, Durm had stints at Huddersfield (2018/19) and Frankfurt (2019 to 2022) until the Palatinate native finally ended up at the club he loved.
In addition to the 2014 World Cup title, his greatest successes include winning the DFB Cup with Dortmund (2017) and the Europa League with Frankfurt (2022).
