The penalties in handball are not difficult to understand.

Here you will find out what yellow card, red card, blue card and time penalty mean in handball.

  • The 2024 European Handball Championships will take place in Germany.

  • The starting shot was given on January 10th, the final will take place on January 28th.

  • In addition to time penalties, yellow cards, red cards and blue cards are handed out as punishment.

Munich – Things can get pretty tough when it comes to handball.

In the physical game, a player is allowed to stop his opponent using physical strength.

A lot is allowed, but in some cases the referees take action and

hand out penalties

- in the form of

cards or time penalties

.

There will also be some of these at the 2024 European Handball Championship, where national coach Alfred Gislason is under great pressure to succeed and which will be shown live on TV and in the live stream by these broadcasters.

We explain which cards there are and what they mean in our overview.

Yellow card in handball: warning after a foul

If the referee pulls out a

yellow card

, he is warning a player who has previously committed a normal foul.

Blocking, pushing away, clinging and pulling on the jersey are typical reasons for a yellow card in

handball

.

Complaining, delays, mistakes in substitutions or foot play are also punished with a yellow box.

Each player can only see yellow once.

Each team is allowed three yellow cards, after which the

referees

have to hand out time penalties.

Only the bank, i.e. the coach or official, can receive another yellow card.

Red card in handball: expulsion and two minutes outnumbered

If a player receives a

red card

, he must leave the field for the remainder of the game.

In addition, he is no longer allowed to sit on the bench with the substitutes.

There are two ways to get a red card.

If a player collects

three time penalties

during a game , the third time penalty also means a red card.

The referees give a direct red card for fouls that endanger health or for

unsportsmanlike behavior

.

In handball, red cards are often given for physical actions that go against the opponent's head or face or when a player pushes his opponent, for example while jumping, so that he loses control of his body.

The affected team must continue playing shorthanded for two minutes after their player

is disqualified

, after which they may refill.

Blue card in handball: This expulsion has further consequences

This regulation is relatively new.

The

Blue Card

was

introduced by the

world association IHF in 2016 .

It can be shown after a red card and is the sign that a report will be made on the fouling player, which can initiate

disciplinary proceedings

.

The so-called red card with report already existed before 2016.

The additional blue card in handball serves primarily to

inform the audience

.

Time penalty in handball: two minutes outnumbered

If either all yellow cards have been used up or a player commits a

serious foul

, the referees will send him off the field

for two minutes

.

The affected team then has to make do with one less player.

Unless they do without the goalkeeper and use another field player instead.

The bench can also be penalized with

two minutes

if an official protests too forcefully or behaves

in an unsportsmanlike manner

.

However, the coach can continue to coach; a player must leave the field

on his behalf

.
