A big bang in world football: Jürgen Klopp is quitting as Liverpool coach at the end of the season.

Is the path now clear to become a coach at FC Bayern?

Liverpool/Munich – Big bang on Friday (January 26th): As Jürgen Klopp announced in an emotional video on X (formerly Twitter), he is leaving Liverpool FC as head coach at the end of the season.

This marks the end of an era that began in October 2015.

There is already a lot of speculation about what could happen next for “Kloppo” in his career.

Does a trail ultimately lead to FC Bayern Munich?

A look at the dream of many fans of the German record champions.

What speaks for it, what speaks against it - and what the situation is like with current Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

Jürgen Klopp will quit as Liverpool coach at the end of the season – will he be the new Bayern coach in the summer?

As soon as a big, successful trainer is fired or voluntarily resigns from his position, the rumor mill on Säbener Straße is constantly churning.

Jürgen Klopp will be leaving Liverpool FC in the summer of 2024.

The 56-year-old led the “Reds” to the championship title and victory in the Champions League during his almost nine-year tenure.

So a coach who knows how to lead a top team - and would therefore be a perfect fit for FC Bayern, who are once again plagued by injuries?

The fact is: In the past, “Kloppo” was never available when Bayern needed a coach of his caliber.

As the English daily newspaper

The Telegraph

reported in May 2022 (article behind paywall), FC Bayern is said to have repeatedly approached Klopp since 2016 - and thus after the departure of coach Pep Guardiola - when a change of coach was imminent.

"I have not done it.

I had a contract here and never did it,” Klopp told the media.

Complete disinterest in the coaching position at Bayern sounds different.

“Could have gone to Bayern a few times”: Klopp on the market from summer – but Tuchel has a contract until 2025

“I could have gone to Bayern a few times where I would have won more titles in my life - pretty sure, I would say.

At least with good chances,” said Jürgen Klopp at the time.

But he didn't want to reveal whether he looked back wistfully at the missed opportunity.

Almost diplomatically, the 56-year-old only announced that it was “completely fine” that a move to the German record champions never materialized – until now.

Klopp, who would have decided to leave Liverpool at the end of the season in November 2023, would be on the market from this summer.

Thomas Tuchel, the current Bayern coach, who has recently been on a cozy course, has a contract that runs until the summer of 2025.

It remains to be seen whether he will or will be allowed to fulfill this requirement.

Bayern doesn't shine under Coach Tuchel - will Jürgen Klopp have to sort it out in the future?

The fact is: Bayern had to say goodbye to a triple early this season.

After the embarrassing cup exit in Saarbrücken, there are still two chances for the title.

In the Champions League, the star squad around clipper Harry Kane will face Lazio Rome in mid-February. Under normal circumstances, the quarter-finals should be reached - which of course is not the maximum for the record champions in the premier class.

In the Bundesliga, the floundering Bayern are in second place behind the almost invincible Leverkusen.

The twelfth German championship in a row may be lost in a direct duel with the team of ex-Bayern kicker Xabi Alonso.

Then Thomas Tuchel's chair could start to wobble a lot - and Klopp could proactively put out feelers for the vacant desk and seat?

That's not completely absurd.

“Kloppo” can definitely be sure of the appreciation of the (former) Bayern bosses.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern's CEO until the summer of 2021, only knew how to praise the coaching grandee in October 2022: “Jürgen Klopp held a key position in Dortmund, he held the club together and took it to a new level “, Rummenigge told the

.

Jürgen Klopp on a sabbatical?

Coach would then be available for a coaching job at Bayern from summer 2025

Jürgen Klopp is generally considered a man-catcher who led Mainz into the Bundesliga in 2004, helped Dortmund regain its former glory with two German championships and a place in the Champions League final in 2013 - and set a monument for himself in Liverpool.

After a difficult period of 30 years, the “Reds” were finally able to celebrate the English championship again in 2020.

So in the summer to the next club that primarily wears red jerseys?

There is no clear evidence of this yet.

In fact, Klopp had recently repeatedly talked about wanting to take a break in the form of a sabbatical year.

After leaving Dortmund at the end of the 2014/2015 season, “Kloppo” was only out of work for around five months before he moved to Anfield.

He wasn't given much time for the workhorse to charge its battery.

Is it possible that coach Jürgen Klopp will never exist again?

After the video announcement that he was leaving Liverpool early, the coach commented on his future for the first time.

“If you asked me if I would ever work as a coach again, I would say no.

But I don’t know what that feels like,” says Klopp, anything but ruling out the end of his career.

According to his own statements, the 56-year-old does not want to train “any club or national team” for at least a year.

If he actually takes a full sabbatical from this summer, Klopp would be available again in the summer of 2025 - when Tuchel's contract with Bayern expires.

Federal “Kloppo”?

Jürgen Klopp could succeed ex-Bayern coach Nagelsmann as DFB coach

Or will Klopp end up taking over as Germany coach?

A position that former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann currently holds - but only until the end of the home European Championship.

Then a new man is needed, who will certainly not have any harm with experience like Klopp's.

Klopp's advisor Marc Kosicke only said to the

Sportschau

in September 2023, when Hansi Flick had to leave as DFB coach: "Jürgen has a long-term contract with the LFC and is not available for the national coaching position."

In summer, however, the situation is different.

Klopp is leaving his contract with Liverpool early, while Nagelsmann's contract with the DFB is expiring.

Provided that Nagelsmann is no longer available or Klopp does not take the announced time off.

Klopp wants to go back to work at some point: “I know that I can’t just sit around.”

He just left it open in what capacity exactly.

By the way: At the Bayern PK before the Bundesliga game in Augsburg, Coach Tuchel was asked directly about Klopp's decision.

“I can understand that, but still, I have to get used to it,” said the Bayern coach about Klopp’s decision.

Was he talking about his successor at Bayern – at whatever point in time?
