Israel's men's team in ice hockey under the age of 20, won the gold medal today (Saturday) in the third level world championship.
The Blue and Whites beat the Turkish team 1:4 in the final of the tournament held in Bulgaria, thus securing promotion to the second tier.
As first published in 'Israel Hayom', Israel's participation in the tournament was in doubt, after the World Ice Hockey Association announced that the Blue and White could not take part on the grounds that they "feared for the safety of the participants".
But the pressure of the Israeli Olympic Committee, the union, the Ministry of Sports and Minister Miki Zohar, as well as international factors, led to the change of the decision.
For Israel, it was a fourth consecutive victory in the competition.
Israel opened with 8:6 over New Zealand, continued with a 3:7 victory over Bulgaria and defeated Kyrgyzstan 1:16, when tomorrow the team will complete its games in the tournament with a protocol match against Mexico.
Following the promotion, next year the team will face somewhat tougher opponents such as Japan, Estonia, Italy, Ukraine and Poland.
During the coming months, tournaments are also expected for the adult women's and men's teams.
